IWY -WHAT HAPPENED?
On June 11-12, 2800 persons met in Columbus for a meeting that was designed to address itself to the range of concerns of Ohio women. The meeting itself.was well planned and structured; however, no one seemed prepared for the well-organized, well financed "Right to Life" delegation. About 700 "Right-to-Lifers" came equipped with a clearly marked van that housed their mimeograph machine and served as a central headquarters. Because they voted a straight party line and even signed affidavits swearing that they had voted the slate, the "Right-to-Lifers' dominated the conference. The anti-abortion forces targeted several workshops to bring up their single issue abortion. They

voted against everything that would give women opportunities outside the home against credit opportunities, against welfare reform, against affirmative action.
What Can Be Learned?
1. The need for coalition. Women who believe in equality must let go of personality conflicts and inter-organizational turf battles. Minority, white, lesbians, black, rich, straight, poor, we must join together in our common struggle. For a few brief hours on Sunday at IWY we did come together.
2. The opposition is organized and well funded. The coalition between the antiabortion forces and the ultra-conservative Eagle Forum indicates that many view the women's movement as a threat. Questions are in order:
-Where does the money come from? --Who is behind the scenes?
Where Do We Go From Here?
WomenSpace is working to strengthen its coalition base and include new members, both organizations and individuals, so that trust levels increase. We all need to know what the different organizations are doing, how we can help each other and what we can build on.
Special outreach to poor women is essential, especially now when the Supreme Court and others
